For the past 9 years since 2015, Running with Strippers has been a performance gathering that we cherish in no small part due to all of you who come and to the artists who have held space with us. As we arrive at a juncture where we are wondering at the agency of art in a time of horrible suffering and turmoil, we recollect works that made us feel deeper because they took us to the wilder edges.

We recall My Grandfather’s Road (2015) by Neo Kim Seng, nineteenseventyeight (2015) by Rizman Putra, Untitled II [Bukit Brown Cemetry III] (2015) by Zai Tang, Disassembly (2017) by Cyril Wong, Qfwfq – 5 lives (2018) by Brian Gothong Tan, Undertable Payment (2018) by Ikbal Lubys, SOMNI (2021) by Intriguant, (W)AVE (2021) by Andy Lim, stev.e and Alina Ling, SO DISTANCE (2021) by Zul Mahmod and Shaherfi Sidin, and free spirits like defØrmed, BGourd, Brandon Tay and Syndicate repeatedly taking us out of ourselves in the way they let go.

The gritty spaces where Running with Strippers happened, in former classrooms, beneath viaducts, carparks, and warehouses made us think of fragility and transience but also surges of joy and abandon where you least expect it. We’d like to think it filled everyone subliminally at least with a sense of hopeful possibility. It did us.

As we put together Running with Strippers 2024, we do so with the belief as the fires roar, we need to keep being together, we need to continue. You’ll experience all you’ve come to expect at Strippers. Togetherness, unexpected art and happenings into the night - So come. We all need to feel we belong and places we can come just as we are.

Maybe for a moment, with each other, we can purge a little bit of that angry, helpless feeling that looms over today and believe in pillars of air and light shining still through the calamitous state of affairs.
