“One Day In This Place is insanely, piss-in-your-pants, funny.
On one level, this production is a showcase for In A Decade, a training programme for young theatre makers run by Cake Theatrical Productions. It is to the credit of the programme that there is nary a weak link among the 10 performers featured: Andrea Ang, Chia Jiayan, Luke Kwek, Faizal Abdullah, Gloria Ng, Michelle Tee, Nicholas Tee, Alexandre Thio and the two forementioned actors.
They display skills not only in comedic and emotional acting, but also in physical theatre and choreography.” The Straits Times Life!
Sticking it out in a hyper-real place.
Doing things and saying things and thinking things out loud.
They keep this up all day.
One Day in this Place is set against a backdrop of an imagined place at once familiar, at once kooky. It features the emerging art practitioners of In A Decade.
New Voices. Fresh Takes. Latest Make. In A Decade. In One Day. In This Place.
“Temple built on good foundation. … In A Decade is a prime example of how relevant coaching and pertinent feedback to nascent performers in all aspects of a production are essential in creating good theatre.” The Straits Times Life!
Seven people find themselves at the threshold of sacred ground.
They (re)build a bridge across –
out of spare parts
out of sticks and stones
out of their bones
out of their bare hands –
Out of bare love, seven people try to make it home.
In 2008, Cake created Temple, commissioned by and presented at the Singapore Arts Festival and the Napoli Teatro Festival Italia. Temple saw the evolution and degeneration of a society of seven staking their claim of territory and moral authority in an abandoned sports hall. Temple examined humanity as an interconnected body predisposed to mega levels of destructiveness.
In 2013, to culminate a twelve-month immersion programme with Cake, the participants of In a Decade take on the task of Re-Constructing Temple. Homing in on Cake’s artistic philosophy and theatre making approach that embraces inventiveness and constant recreation, the participants embark on a process of discovering and then responding to an existing and enigmatic blueprint. Cake as an entity with all its abiding members, becomes the eleventh collaborator joining this group of ten as equal artistic collaborators in this wholly devised original work.
